Alt text
Alt text is the written alternative to an image, read aloud by screen readers and shown when the image fails to load. It describes what the image conveys for someone who cannot see it.
Good alt text says what a sighted reader gets from the image, in the context of the page. A product photo's alt text names the product; a chart's alt text states what the chart shows; a decorative flourish gets an empty alt attribute, which tells assistive technology to skip it. "Image" and "photo" are not alt text, and neither is a list of keywords.
It is an accessibility requirement first and a search consideration second. Search engines do use alt text to understand images, which is why keyword-stuffed alt text became a habit, but that habit produces text that is useless to the people it exists for. Write it for a listener, and the search benefit follows.
In a CMS the alt text field should be required for informative images and explained: a short note on what good alt text is prevents a hundred empty fields later. That is a content-model decision, not an editorial one.
