Conversion
Conversion rate
Conversion rate is the share of visitors who complete a defined action: form submissions divided by visits, for example. It is the most quoted website metric and the most easily misread.
The number is only as meaningful as the action it counts. A conversion rate on "any form submission" mixes qualified enquiries with spam and mis-clicks. A rate on "booked calls with companies in the target segment" is harder to measure and far more useful. Define the conversion before measuring it, or the measurement will define it for you.
Rates also move for reasons that have nothing to do with the page. A campaign that attracts the wrong audience lowers the rate on a page that did not change. Removing a qualifying question raises the rate and often lowers revenue, and only a team that follows leads through to closed deals will ever notice.
For a service business the honest goal is not the highest rate but the right one: enough friction to filter enquiries that cannot become clients, and no more. A rate that rises while the pipeline stays flat is a warning sign, not a success.
